2020 Good Food Awards Finalists

07 Nov 2019 2020 Good Food Awards Finalists

The Good Food Foundation has announced its 2020 Good Food Awards finalists and we’re proud to share that we have three Liquid Riot products (!!!) on the list of 403 Good Food-rated products. They are: our Old Port Straight Rye Whiskey — thanks to distiller Ian Michaud — and our Vinlandic and Persusasion — thanks to brewer Greg Abbot.

Good Food selected these three from a blind tasting of 1,835 entries from across the country and then reviewed the products to confirm they met Good Food Awards standards regarding ingredient sourcing and environmentally sound agricultural practices.

We’re in great company, our friends and collaborators at Speckled Axe are on the list for their Ethiopia Jabicho, and so are Maine Grains, where our rye comes from, for their Organic Corn Polenta and Organic Pearled Farro. Other great Maine producers on the list include Allagash Brewing Company, A Small Good, Black Dinah Chocolatiers, Chocolats Passion, Dean’s Sweets, Posto Bello, Atlantic Sea Farms and GrandyOats.

You’ll find Vinlandic, Persuasion and Old Port Rye Whiskey at the Riot to sip on at the bar or to take with you from our retail shop.

Our Old Port Rye Whiskey is an American Rye using Maine grown rye from Maine Grains in Skowhegan, and malted barley from Buck Farms’ Maine Malt House in Mapleton. We also use Chocolate Malt, a specialty brewers’ malt that lends the finished spirit deep, roasty, chocolate notes. It is aged a minimum of 4 years in new charred American white oak barrels barrels by the sea in Portland’s old Port and bottled at 45% ABV.

Previously this smooth, flavorful Rye Whiskey earned a Bronze from the 2016 American Craft Spirits Association and Silver in the 2015 Great American Spirits Festival.

Vinlandic is a complex, herbal ale inspired by Nordic brewing traditions, brewed using locally sourced ingredients from our friends at Blue Ox Malthouse, Maine Grains and The Hop Yard, along with locally foraged juniper boughs. It’s then transferred into Icelandic Brennivin barrels with a special Brettanomyces strain, giving a slightly funky, oaky finish. 8% ABV

Persuasion is a sour brown ale brewed with local grains from Blue Ox Malthouse and barrel fermented with a blend of yeasts and microbes in port barrels, then transferred onto locally grown Montmorency cherries for a tart, dessert-like finish. 7% ABV

The 2020 Good Food Award Finalists emphasize fairness and transparency from seed to plate, promote safe and enjoyable working environments, and safeguard biodiversity by creating products free of genetically modified ingredients. We’re proud that we craft food that is good for consumers and the environment.

Winners will be announced in January!
