What Is Whiskey and What Are The Different Types?

16 Jan 2023 What Is Whiskey and What Are The Different Types?

Whiskey is a distilled spirit that is made from many different types of grains such as barley, rye, corn, and wheat. Many whiskeys are aged in wooden barrels, typically made of oak, and most whiskey ends with a minimum 40% ABV. There are multiple different types of whiskey. Here at Liquid Riot we have 4 different types of Whiskey.

Bourbon

Made only in the U.S.A, Bourbon has some very tight regulations. Bourbon has to be made from at least 51% corn, distilled under 160 proof, barreled at less than 125 proof, and has to be aged in new charred oak barrels. The flavor is typically nutty and a mellow, caramelized sweetness.

Our Old Port Bourbon, at 45% ABV and 90 Proof, is crafted using Maine grown corn, rye and buckwheat. Distilled in the heart of Portland’s Old Port, this small batch whiskey brings big flavor to the coast of Maine.

This has won the Good Food Awards in 2019, San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Gold medal in 2018, and Silver in New York World Spirits Competition in 2018.

Single Malt

A single Malt whiskey contains only one type of malted grain (typically barley). It may include whiskey from several different casks.

Our Old Port Single Malt Whiskey, at 45% ABV and 90 Proof, is made with American cherry wood smoke barley. This smoky spirit is aged in small, charred American oak barrels that previously held American Bourbon. The finished product is soft and mellow with a hint of smoke, a truly unique whiskey that’s American through and through.

This won silver in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2018, Bronze in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2017, Silver in the American Distilling Institute in 2016, and Bronze in the American Craft Spirits Association in 2016.

Rye

Rye contains at least 51% rye in its mash bill and is aged in newly charred oak barrels in the U.S. As a result, it tends to be lighter bodied than most other whiskeys, tasting bold and spicy.

Our Old Port Rye Whiskey, at 45% ABV and 90 Proof, is small batch and is carefully distilled from a recipe utilizing Maine grown rye as well as specialty roasted brewers’ barley. Aged in small barrels by the sea in Portland’s Old Port, our Rye Whiskey drinks smooth and flavorful.

This won bronze in 2016 from American Craft Spirits Association and silver in 2015 from Great American Spirits Festival.

Oat Whiskey

Oats are the primary grain used in oat whiskey, hence the name. It has a unique flavor profile which makes it perfect for sipping neat or in a cocktail.

Our Oat Whiskey, at 45% ABV and 90 Proof, starts life as a great batch of sweet, creamy oatmeal made with organic, Maine-grown oats. After fermentation with fresh brewers’ yeast, we carefully distill out all the alcoholic goodness while retaining aromas of fresh oats and a creamy mouth-feel. The new spirit is laid down in fresh charred American White Oak barrels, where it takes on color and flavor from the wood. An uncommon whiskey indeed!
